Discussion on damage of triathlon race

The damage of the triathlon in a certain distance race depends on the player’s level.

Can you imagine this “damage difference” easily?

The race damage here is the acquired TSS that occurred in one race and does not mean that you are partially injured somewhere in the body.

Those who are fast in the race can do training immediately on the next day or move the body with recovery strength (active rest).

However, those who are late in the race often have pain in many parts of the body, and it is often preferable to take a complete rest than an active rest.

I thought why such a difference would come out, and found the answer easier than I thought.

The answer is qualitatively because LT pace differs naturally between fast and slow players, but the race distance is the same.

So there is a difference in “racing duration”, which means TSS will be different and the degree of fatigue will change.

How to understand training stress score (TSS®) per day

TSS less than 150 – low (recovery is almost completed by next day)
150-300 – Moderate (Although fatigue may be left on the next day, you can get tired on the second day)
300-450 – High (There may be some residual fatigue even after 2 days)
450 or more – very high (residual fatigue that may last several days)

Therefore, I tried to check quantitatively to what extent it is different.

It is a premise.

· Sample categories are classified into professional, elite, TOP side of middle class, bottom side of middle class, beginner
· Distance was short distance, intensity was 0.95 regardless of part
· Bike is based on the fact that the speed of 30 km/h comes out at 171W. Then, assuming that the speed change is the root of the power ratio (air resistance, that is, the required power is effective by the square of speed)

I summarize the calculation results in a table.

Finish times are approx.;Professional-1:56, Elite-2:08、M-TOP-2:30、M-BOT-2:53、Beginner-3:11(caution for unit)

At this time, TSS for Elite is 203, based on this, the difference between TSS with each category are;
Professional : -9%(TSS184)
M-TOP : +17%(TSS238)
M-BOT : +36%(TSS275)
Beginner : +49%(TSS302)

That is, even if the relative strength (IF = 0.95) is the same, comparing the damage between the elite and the beginner is 1.5 times different.

Also from this index, if the TSS is about 200, I think that the triathlete will be able to move the next day, but you can also see that it is hard to get over the TSS 250.

How to understand training stress score (TSS®) per day

Although it is an additional explanation, the 3 hour endurance race etc in the road bike will be the same degree of fatigue in any player category, if the relative strength is the same.

The difference in ability will be reflected in the mileage.

In the case of changing the race intensity by the category player of “middle-TOP”

Now let’s consider a case where a player in a certain category went to race with different race intensity.

The result is here.

As the race intensity increases, the race duration becomes shorter, but the intensity rising effect is stronger and the TSS becomes higher.

Even if the race intensity (IF) changes by 0.05, the load changes greatly.

So, in order to shorten the race duration, it is better to aim for how to increase LTP pace (FTP) than to aim at how high intensity you can move.

That’s why we need high-intensity training.

I think it is so especially when the race distance is long.
